Sycamore Pepper and Mahogany Salt Shaker are handmade on the wood lathe.  Both the stainless steel cap and the rubber stopper are food safe materials.  The Sycamore and Mahogany Shakers have many layers of a protective high gloss coating that are built up while the lathe is spinning.  This creates and heavy even coat that is resilient and beautiful.  Picture these unique items made from natural wood products on your kitchen table. Mahogany is a favorite wood for all wood artist as is Sycamore.  Take a close look at Sycamore grain when you get a chance.  Many people confuse it with Maple, but it’s much more complex and interesting.
History of the Wood Lathe
Because most of the items I design and make on the wood lathe I think it is important to share more information about this tool.  I did not know that ancient Egyptians depended on this machine so much and how important it became in fulling the Industrial Revolution.

Care for Shakers
Keep out of direct sunlight
Minimize exposure to wide swings in humidity levels
Do not wash with water, use only a damp cloth
Wax lightly with a quality food safe wax or oil and buff to restore luster.  I like beeswax or walnut oil. Mineral Oil is also good.
