SOLD Butternut Natural Edge Platter
This is beautiful Butternut Natural Edge Platter that is a one of a kind item with the bark along the edge. The style is Natural Edge. The definition of Natural Edge is a wood product with the bark left intact or the rough edge that remains if the bark is removed or falls off. Interesting fact is that wood harvested in the winter or fall will more likely maintain the bark in place. Wood harvested in the spring or summer will often see the bark fall off as the wood dries. This is due to the wet fibers under the bark not having enough time to attach to the sapwood.
The pattern that you see here is where two branches radiate known as the crotch. The dark brown wood is the older hardwood whereas the white wood is the young sapwood. Harvest a crotch log correctly and you will find beautiful figure and texture in the cross-section. There is a crack between the branches. I filled it with color resin to appear as a flowing river. The size is 14 inches by 12 inches by 1 1/2 inches. These pieces will surely provide years of enjoyment.
