Whimsical Wood Items

Workshop Experience

Fish, Tuba and Sea Cucumber are whimsical wood items from a Workshop with Michael Hosulak. Michael is an incredible wood artist and it was my long term goal to spend several days with him. Finally, in the fall of 2019 Suzanne Boswell of Dovetail Wood Arts and I put together the workshop with six other talented woodturners.

I think of Michael as the Picasso of wood turning, To me his art is similar to Cubism. Mike creates a symmetrical form on the lathe and then proceeds to cut it up, glue it back together and add texture so it is not recognizable from the original part. Take a look at this link to learn more about his work.

I designed these three wooden art pieces Fish, Tuba and Sea Cucumber, in a two day workshop. The Sea Cucumber is in the style of Michael’s signature pieces. The Magical Tuba began as a form very similar to the shape of a long funnel. I then cut it up at various angles and glued it back together in this flowing shape. The wood Fish is turned on the lathe as a bottle shape. Then a slice is removed from the center and the part was glued back together to form the oval shape of a fish. I plan on continuing with the Fish Series. Here is a link for a school of fish.

I like to think of my work as being original. Much of Whimsical Wood Items come from Nature, great artists like Matisse, Magritte and Mondrian and Frank Stella. My mind is always spinning with ideas, many of which I will never have enough time to execute, I hope that the work that I do present you will find interesting.
