Vintage Oil Can Boxes

Vintage Oil Can Boxes feature those cute vintage oil cans you may have seen in your grandfather’s shop.  No longer very useful I convert them  into Steampunk jewelry boxes.

I design these Vintage Oil Can Boxes because I have a collection of these antique thumb oil cans and wanted to do something to bring them back for a useful purpose.  The idea of a jewelry box with the oil can being the lid came to mind.  I turn a wood base that the oil can will friction fit into.  The challenge is to make a base shape that works with the oil can shape, color and size.  There are an infinite amount of shapes and colors to invent.  They represent a throw back in time for DIY folks. I think every grandfather had one to keep the motor on the furnace running. At least, that is what I hear at craft fairs.  Someone walks up and says, “Hay, my grandfather had one of those.”

The wood base is 3 1/4 inch diameter by 3 1/2 inches tall. The antique oil can lid is 5 inches tall. Total height is 8 1/2 inches.

The oil can fits snugly into the wood base and will make a great safe place to hold jewelry on a nightstand or just be an accessory piece on a desk.
