Everyone loves vintage oil cans and no one knows what to do with them. I got the idea to design these unique Oil Can Jewelry Boxes by combining them with wood bases.
Vintage Oil Can Jewelry Box
I have a collection of very cool antique thumb oil cans and wanted to do something with them to bring them back for a useful purpose. The idea of a jewelry box with the oil can being the lid came to mind. I turn a wood base so the oil can friction fits into a recess. The challenge is to make a base shape that works with each oil can shape and size. There are an infinite amount of wooden shapes and colors to invent. The oil can box makes a great safe place to hold jewelry on a nightstand or just be an accessory piece on a desk.
These oil cans represent a throw back in time for DIY folks. I bet every grandfather had one to oil his bicycle, fix a door hinge squeak and to keep the motor on the furnace running. At just about every craft show someone will say, “There is one just like that in my Grandfather’s house.”
The size of the wood base is 3 1/4 inch diameter by 3 1/2 inches tall. The antique oil can lid is 5 inches tall. Total height is 8 1/2 inches.
