The first time I saw a NIP Bowl was in a gallery and I knew I had to learn about this woodturning craft. This NIP Bowl features extraordinary earth tone colors and the red spots are where the branches grew.

The Norfolk tree grows in Florida and Hawaii.  The raw wood is beige.  When it gets a linseed oil bath spectacular the colors evolve.  The bowl soaks in oil for several weeks and absorbs into the wood fibers.   A thin wall bowl will be translucent under a bright light. Sometimes the wood will look like tortoise shell. The branch knots become red and may appear as animal faces.

My Journey Into Wood Turning

My introduction to woodturning was in a New York gallery.  I was studying a wood bowl when the Gallery Director approached. He explained that the bowl was made by an Hawaiian artist.  Knowing nothing about woodturning I was curious to learn the price. $3000 and it is a deal.  I was in love, but that was not going to happen.  For $3000 I could take lessons and buy the tools.  I took the  lessons and two days later I had a lathe and tools for $2000.  This was 2009 and it was a great decision.
