Description
This Lost Wood Vase begins as an assembly of three layers of wood. On the outside are two layers of Sapele and in the center is a waste block of pine. I turn the assembly and then separate the pieces to remove the waste block. I glue the good wood back together and the result is a oval shape. The size is 6 x 6 x 4.5 inches.
Lost Wood Process
Lost Wood Vase is a hollow from style and credit belongs to Art Liestman who teaches this technique known as the “Lost Wood Process.” The process is to glue three sections of wood together like a sandwich except the best stuff is on the outside. Now I turn the shape on the lathe. The result will be a symmetrical shape. I am looking for an oval shape to simulate a flatter vase. The next step is cutting away the center waste block and reassemble the two outer pieces. The result is an oval shape rather than a round shape from standard turning methods.
The Lost Wood Process is not common, but it does produce interesting results as in this piece changing a cylinder to a flat form.

Studio
I design and produce all my items in my studio in Montvale,New Jersey, USA. My primary machine is the wood lathe. This tool allows me to create the form. Once the shape is complete it is necessary to perform secondary operations at the studio bench.
