Large Wood Sea Urchin

Large Wood Sea Urchin.  We all love scavenging the beach for keepsakes. Sometimes we get lucky with a starfish, sand dollar or in this case a sea urchin.  Meet Large Wood Sea Urchin. I turn, carve and bleach to simulate Mother Nature.  Size is about 4 inches in diameter. This is the treasure we look for on a beach vacation.

Here I explore making wood sea urchins using Madrone wood. After turning the hollow form on the lathe I spend several days at the workbench carving the details with a high speed dental drill.  The final piece looks like it is washed up on the beach shore.

Madrone wood grows on West Coast.  It is very difficult to get it on the East Coast.  When this wood dries it distorts and takes on a new shape.  When a coral piece comes off the lathe it is a perfect ball.  A few days the shape is different making it perfect material for these organic creatures. When complete it is impossible to identify the urchin as made from wood.  My objective with this series is to change the appearance of wood so that it no longer looks like wood.

Studio

I design and produce all these items in my Montvale, New Jersey studio.  THe primary machine is the Robust wood lathe.  It can do large pieces that weigh several hundred pounds or a small item like this wood art weighing several ounces.  The machine offers incredible accuracy.  However, the lathe only gets part of the job done.  Critical and tedious work like carving, piercing and finishing takes place at the workbench.
