Commission Art
Genesis Wood Art Platter is a commission piece for a family honoring their departed father. The theme of this piece is the Story of Life. The wood is cherry from a tree growing at the gravesite of the father. The cemetery notified the family that the tree had to be removed as it was damaging nearby gravesites. The son spoke with management to allow him to secure large logs from the tree for family heirlooms.
Genesis Wood Platter
I received a phone call asking if I would make some items for the family members. I loved the idea to create pieces for this important commission. This Genesis Wood Art Platter was the most complicated. It is my interpretation of Life. Starting on the left is the deep ocean. Then as we move to the right we see birds as we near land. Next there are the mountains and rivers, rural areas with farms and towards the lower center are the population centers with bridges. Around the rim is the galaxy with Stars.
Branding Symbols With Pyrography
Pyrography techniques create the symbols. This is a wood branding process. A red hot wire burns the wood leaving a depression. Maybe you tried this back in the Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts with a tool that looks like a soldering iron.
This is the wood platter made for the son. The platter twisted and cracked. I gave it the name Grieving and Healing.
I received an Award for Genesis Platter at a Regional Symposium for Woodworkers in Saratoga, New York. My studio is in Montvale, New Jersey. Commission work can be very stressful. The piece must represent what the client is looking for. The artist has a responsibility to meet the expectations of the customer.
