Giant Jack Wooden Toy

Making Birthday Gifts For Grandchildren

Giant Jack Wooden Toy as a birthday gift for Grandson Jack. Of all the grandchildren, he of course deserves a giant Jack. I always try to come up with an innovative gift for each grandchild’s birthday. An item that they will appreciate and perhaps become a family heirloom. It is no easy task to come up with something that seems relevant. To create a unique and meaningful gift for five grandchildren can be very stressful. Here is another birthday gift I made for Jack.

When the idea came to me to make a Giant Jack for Grandson Jack I had to figure out how to make it on the lathe. A month or so before I found a solution to produce a multi axis piece that had thwarted me for years. I woke up one morning with the solution clear in my head. I went to the studio and made the piece. The creative process is so mind boggling to me how ideas generate and come to mind seemingly out of nowhere. The concept to make Jack the Giant Jack Wooden Toy was fairly easy to execute even though I never made one before. It seems my mind knew exactly what to do.

Multi Axis Turning

Most woodturning takes place on a single axis. Meaning the wood spins between two fixed center points. I have seen demonstrations of multi axis turning where the turner changes the axis to an off center position. I found this a difficult concept to understand and it took time and many failures to be able to get the results I was seeking. Now that I understand the concept and have experience making unusual shapes a whole new world of sculptural opportunities have opened. It is important to think outside the box to grow as an artist. I push myself to be open to new techniques and implement them into my art.
