This is Mia’s Fantasy Chair. When a grandchild turns two, I build an Adirondack Style theme chair based on their current interest. This is the first of five chairs that I built. Mia is a bright kid with a big imagination. She is constantly chatting, exploring and has an interest in nature, especially animals.
Mia’s Fantasy Chair features many flora and animal elements made on the bandsaw and lathe. Each chair is challenging and fun to make. The kids looks forward to their second birthday to see what I will come up with. I have a feeling these chairs may become family heirlooms. I can see how much they care for them by the placement they have in their rooms.
Building the Chair
Each chair takes about 40 hours to build from the time I develop the concept and draw out the pieces to final assembly. For the most part the components are made on a wood lathe and band saw. It takes hours to sand, shape, paint and assemble the chair. It is very exciting to develop the project from concept to final product. The kids and parents appreciate these special gifts.
The seat is a series of earthtone color slats. The back of the seat is a group of fern shape leaves. The side rails feature fish and the arm supports are a giant elephant legs. Here is the link to a chair I made for my Granddaughter Charlotte. Not difficult to guess what is her interest.
